Who We Are
Hello and welcome!
I am Marisa Corado, a professional woman, a wife, a mother, and the face behind Mercury Clothiers.
Fashion has been a love of mine since I was a little girl. I grew up wearing school uniforms so when I had the opportunity to wear other clothes, I loved putting outfits together that were just a bit different than the norm. From hats to flamboyant colors; I didn’t like the cookie cutter look.
I have also always been a career-minded person. I never took a liking to dolls (other than dressing them up), nor did I routinely plan my wedding day or spend hours dreaming up names for my future children. Working as a business woman was my dream. Nowhere in the plan was getting married and having a family. Not because I rejected the idea; it just wasn’t a priority.
[I am now happily married with 2 beautiful children — funny how life happens.]
It’s no surprise that my love for fashion and career has come full circle and brought me to founding my own fashion line, Mercury Clothiers, designing vintage-inspired glamorous suiting and dresses for professional women.
Fashion & Career
I have been working in male-dominated industries for the majority of my life. It has made me brutally aware of the many ways we are different and the many ways society has conformed molded women to be more like men. The business suit is one of them.
Working in Washington D.C., everyone dresses in suits. Casual Friday attire has crept into the week for some but the clothing currency for those in positions of higher authority and power is the suit.
The Suit
Women do not have a dedicated store for suits so we have to hunt around to find them. I still have suits that I’ve bought from various stores claiming feminine and fashion forward design, but beyond the basic black, navy, khaki, and grey, the suit choices for women are actually quite limited.
The colors aren’t the only thing that are uninteresting. More often than not, the suits are skin-tight trousers with boxy jackets that are made of a poly-blend material.
Where are the suits from the 1930s, 40s, 50s— the feminine jackets, wide leg trousers, and skirts that went well below the knee?
It is boring! What happened to the elegant suits that would look great if you were out to dinner or in the office? The suits in different colors that expressed some personality? Where are the suits in natural fibers that feel gorgeous to wear?
Enter: Mercury Clothiers
I stopped waiting for someone else to make something and dove in to create it myself.
At Mercury Clothiers, we believe you should be able to celebrate your femininity and your clothes should empower you to feel fabulous and in charge.
We offer elegant suiting with unique tailored details and chic dresses in gorgeous colors. Our trousers are a wider cut and have a higher waist. Our skirt is tailored to be a slimmer fit but still be forgiving in the hips and thighs.
Clothes can be a powerful and an immediate way to present yourself. No matter your profession, if you spend a lot of time interacting with other people, you most likely care about your outward appearance and how you present yourself. We do too.
Our suits are crafted with a real woman’s body in mind, using natural fabrics. The structured vintage fit with sophisticated lines gives you a presence in the office and makes you feel like you can take on anything.
Women Empowering Women
I have grown from a girl who loved clothes to a career woman who is fed up with boring, masculine-type suits. And now I am an entrepreneur who is doing something about it.
I am excited for this endeavor and am thrilled to have such a great team of women working alongside me. These ladies have been more than clients and business partners. They have become mentors, cheerleaders, and even friends. This an amazing testament to women who, contrary to the stereotype as catty and petty, are eager to support and build-up other women in business.
