I started Mercury Clothiers because of a lack of inspired options for professional women at a price point below high end designers. I'd never considered myself an entrepreneur, but the process of researching and starting a business has been an empowering and incredible experience.

I've met amazing women who are in the fashion, design, and business worlds — and discovered so many more who have trailblazed paths for female entrepreneurs. I'm excited to share my journey and the stories of many inspiring women with you — right here.

Ladies, ladies, ladies. If we’ve seen it once, we’ve seen it a thousand times. We work ourselves to the ground and end up becoming so sick we can’t get out of bed. It’s a vicious cycle. One that isn’t good for your reputation at work or your personal health. So, how do we change it? By following these self care ideas!

Why do we put Self Care on the back burner?

First off, let’s identify when it happens. Unfortunately (for your health), there are multiple scenarios.

  1. Your determination (and perhaps the necessity) to prove yourself in the workplace.
  2. Taking on additional responsibilities to show off your abilities.
  3. Your unwavering work ethic when work is busy.

No matter which one, or even if all of these reasons resonate with you, the bottom line is — it is easy to put your self care ideas on hold while you are busy at work. Let’s fix that because without you, the work does not get done nearly as well, right? Right. We know!

On another note, know when to say “no” to more work. Your health and family life are affected by your workload. Learn how to find a balance by reading our (Link to post 5 Tips to Acquire & Maintain A Work-Life Balance for the Working Mother. April content.) blog post.

Self Care Tip #1: Skin Care

Sleep

Our skin is a big part our identity. It is one of the first things people see when they look at you. You need to take care of your skin as it is also the largest organ you have.

When we are tired, our skin shows it. It becomes visibly dull. You have heard those dreaded words from your co-workers before — “you look tired”.

It’s clinically proven. Tiredness = lifeless skin

Allure Magazine published an entire article on just this topic.

“Cortisol levels go up, your fight-or-flight response kicks in, and blood flow goes to your vital organs, not your face, leading to skin looking sallow,” explains Mona Gohara, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine.

If your skin is that distracting, we need to do something about it. Don’t they know who you are? You haven’t been working like a mad woman for that measly comment.

Cleanse

From daily sunscreen use to a cleansing regimen, a proper skin care routine is another essential for healthy, happy-looking skin.

This can quickly become something we skip to save time in the morning before heading out the door.

Spritz

As well as your morning skincare routine, we suggest keeping a rose water spritzer (not the potable kind) in your desk drawer. Lightly spray it on your face after lunch or before a meeting to perk yourself up a little. It’s a treat for the skin and the senses.

Stick to your regimen and rose water and you will feel better and look better, trust us.

Self Care Tip #2: Hydration and Diet

You know what they say — you are what you eat. Well, you know by now that you aren’t going to turn into a pumpkin or grow a watermelon in your stomach.

Nevertheless, the ideal is still true. Your diet affects a lot when it comes to your overall health. Everything from digestion to your mood as well as your skin and hair. Feeding your body nutritious food is very important to become the best version of yourself.

Hydration is also paramount for the same reasons. It is a fact that water makes up about ⅔ of the body. According to Mercola, a natural health website, dehydration affects your brain, your blood consistency and your ability to regulate your body temperature.

That’s more than just an annoying headache you get. A lot happens without you being aware. It’s eye-opening!

So, the next time you are feeling chilly in the office, think to yourself, when was the last time I had a drink of water?

Self Care Tip #3: Exercise

Exercise promotes psychological well-being and helps reduce stress and blood pressure, according to The Illinois Department of Public Health.

The next question is — how do we find time for it? And the answer is brutal. We make time for it. It will be a struggle in the beginning but exercise is so important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Don’t think that exercise has to be done before or after work hours. Intrigued? Keep reading for step #4.

Self Care Tip #4: Cubicle Care

Depending on your workspace setup and how much room you have, bring in a treadmill or stationary bike. With quick access, you can easily take walk, run, or bike breaks throughout the day.

There is even such thing as a stationary bike chair! They range about $200 to $300. Find one here or here.

Here’s another idea — combine your standing desk with a treadmill and it becomes a walking desk. Genius!

Besides updating your workspace with exercise equipment, we also suggest buying a pair of compression socks to keep in your drawer (along with step #1).

Pamper your tired legs with some compression socks. You can find a good pair of graduated compression socks that are incognito here. With a choice of color, no one will know you’re wearing them. Secret comfort? That is our type of style.

Self Care Tip #5: Mental Health

The first 4 steps prepare you for being physically ready for the workload. Let’s talk about being mentally ready. Being busy takes a toll on your mental state too. We mentioned relieving stress with exercise above. Along with stress, anxiety and depression can set in when things are bustling too.

Be aware of this and have a release.
